Michael Leeds

As Director, Writer and Choreographer:  Michael Leeds has worked with such talented and legendary artists as Arthur Miller, Martin Scorsese, Dennis Hopper, Liza Minnelli, Lynn Redgrave, Tyne Daly, Tommy Tune, Donna Murphy, Kate Burton, Stephen Schwartz, Kander & Ebb, and many others. For film, he choreographed End of Summer, starring Jacqueline Bisset and Peter Weller and co-wrote Linda Yellen’s The Simian Line, starring William Hurt, Lynn Redgrave, Tyne Daly and Harry Connick Jr., The Last Film Festival starring Dennis Hopper and Jacqueline Bisset and Fluidity starring Nico Tortorella (Younger) and Tommy Dorfman (13 Reasons Why), and Chantilly Bridge starring JoBeth Williams, Jill Eikenberry, Lindsay Crouse, Patricia Richardson, Talia Shire and Ally Sheedy.   His latest film, One Stupid Thing  is currently in post-production. For theatre he wrote and directed the Tony nominated B’way musical, Swinging On A Star.   Off-B’way he directed and choreographed Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah – The Songs of Allan Sherman, starring Tovah Feldshuh & Mary Testa, for which he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Best Director and Best Choreographer.  His adaptation and direction of Arthur Miller’s Playing For Time won a Festival First at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where it was given its European premiere.   He has directed for Playwrights Horizons, the York Theatre, Paper Mill Playhouse and the Goodspeed Opera House among others.  His opera credits included  directing and choreographing A Little Night Music for the Houston Grand Opera starring Frederica Von Stade and Regina starring Lauren Flannigan for Florida Grand Opera.  As a playwright, his play Who Killed Joan Crawford? premiered at Island City Stage and received the Award for Best New Work of 2016 by the Miami New Times.  Other plays include Impressions, The First Step – Diary of a Sex Addict, The Gift, Starmaker and Mira.   As a songwriter, Mr. Leeds’ work has appeared Off-B’way in Martin Charnin’s Upstairs At O’Neals and the No Frills Revue, as well as on CBS’s The Comedy Zone. Mr. Leeds also collaborated on Miracles, a musical he wrote with Joe Stein, with a score by Sheldon Harnick, Stephen Schwartz, David Shire and Marvin Hamlisch. He co-wrote, directed and choreographed Mating Habits of the Urban Mammal,  for the Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs. Mr. Leeds is Associate Artistic Director at Island City Stage in Fort Lauderdale and since coming to South Florida, his many directing credits have earned him the prestigious Carbonell and Silver Palm Awards.   He is proud to have studied with renowned Acting Coach, Larry Moss for ten years. back to top
